Abstract:Dong Zhongshu used the theory of the Five Elements of Yin and Yang as the basis for theory to build a unique “official system of Xiangtian” study. “Official system of heaven and earth” is conditioned by the mutual relationship between heaven and man, and has the connotation of two levels: one is that the number of heaven above the direction is strictly corresponds to the system of the official, and a system of officials is built with the data of the three, four, ten, twelve, and twenty heavens; the other is that the five elements of the erect and upward are strictly corresponds to the five senses, and the five elements are born and strengthened as a basis to build a system of five senses that coexist and restrain each other. The first system is purely a fantasy structure, and all officials are divided according to virtue and are not manipulated; the second system is determined by the cooperation of different responsibilities and is based on reality, hoping to effectively bind the unrestrained royal power and be a deeply emotional official system in a large political environment.

Dong Zhongshu settled in “Age” and built a systematic study of the heavenly and man based on the five elements of the yin and yang, which was the more generalized worship structure. This system uses the ruler to establish politics and education based on the way of heaven, and integrates with heaven as the foundation of saints, hoping to use the way of heaven to standardize human nature. If we say that the principle is to “reach the king and extend the king”, then the restriction on the king’s rights is to “reach the king and extend the heaven”. While the academic community has gained more and more common understanding of this in-depth concern about Dong Xue and has already conducted in-depth research, it has ignored the efforts of Dong Zhongshu’s solemn official system to restrict the monarchy. In “Three Strategies for Heaven and Man”, Dong Zhongshu strongly criticized the Han family’s administrative problems and challenged the existing power format with the academic component. Emperor Wu’s arrogance against the scholars showed that Dong Zhongshu had difficulty in reforming the administration in real politics[3]. Therefore, Dong Zhongshu can only construct his own power operation system in theory. 1. The number of heaven and the system of officials

 

Dong Zhongshu said in the opening chapter of “Official System Xiangtian”:

 

The kings are the officials, the three dukes, the nine ministers, the twenty-seven officials, and the eighty-one Yuan scholars, and there are 120 people, and the ministers are all in charge. I heard that the sage king took, the law [4] of the heavens, formed by three times, four times, and the official system is the same. What is the sage and the other? Three people are one choice, and the one in March is one time. Four choices stop, and end at four hours. The three dukes are the reason why the king is reserved. Heaven completes it with three, and the king uses three reservedness. If you establish the number of plants and plant them in four levels, it can be lost. This paragraph first listed the 120 short-term government officials made by the kings, focusing on the basic principles of the kings’ system. The so-called “the sage taken by the sage king is the great zodiac sign of heaven, and the same is true for the official system” means that the kingly government is based on the laws of heaven. The king’s official system is divided into four grades, including the ministers, ministers, officials, and scholars. The fourth grade is the “four choices”; from the king, each grade is accompanied by three people, which is what Dong Zhongshu said, “three people are the choices”. Specifically, there are four times a year, so the official position of the system is divided into four choices; if the official position becomes one in three months, the official position is selected by three people. Whether it is the “four” of the four hours or the “three” of the three months, they are all the so-called “number of heaven”. The “number of heaven” here only refers to the general meaning, and focuses on expressing some specific “numbers” related to the laws of heaven. In Dong Zhongshu’s text, “number” is used in many places, meaning “Tao”. The number of heaven is also the way of heaven. Therefore, the focus of “official system of heaven” is to use the four choices and “three people as one choice” as the four times and “three months become one time” that represent the way of heaven.
